State Rep. Mike Harris today invited local business owners in north-central Oakland County to attend an informative roundtable on the new requirements of Michigan’s Earned Sick Time Act.

Harris, joined by a special guest from the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, will hold the event on Monday, April 28, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Shark Club, 6665 Highland Road in Waterford Township.

“I’m looking forward to bringing together Oakland County business owners and the pros from the Michigan Chamber of Commerce to discuss Michigan’s Earned Sick Time Act,” said Harris, R-Waterford. “Thanks to the bipartisan compromise passed earlier this year, sick time rules now are fairer and clearer for both workers and small businesses. Employers are working carefully to follow the law, and I’m glad to connect local small-business owners with resources and information so they can have confidence that they’re complying with the law.”

New rules expanding earned sick time requirements for Michigan employers took effect this February. The expansion was ordered last summer by the Michigan Supreme Court, although Harris and his colleagues in the Legislature secured a bipartisan deal to clarify the rules, protect generous paid time off plans, and simplify procedures for workers and small businesses. Additionally, employers with 10 or fewer employees have until October 1 to comply with the rules.

Individuals interested in attending should RSVP to Harris’ office by emailing [email protected]. Harris represents the 52nd House District, which includes Lake Angelus, Clarkston, Independence Township, and portions of Springfield and Waterford townships.
