State Rep. Matthew Bierlein will play a critical role in delivering sorely needed government transparency for the 2025-26 legislative term.
Bierlein today was named Vice Chair of the House Oversight Committee. The committee examines state government operations, including Auditor General reports and legislation affecting the functioning of state government. He also will chair the House Oversight Subcommittee on Public Health and Food Security and serve on the House Oversight Subcommittee on Corporate Subsidies and State Investments.
“I want to thank Speaker Matt Hall for choosing me to serve on these committees. A huge priority for people in communities I represent and people across the state is more accountability in government,” said Bierlein, of Vassar. “People want to know how their tax dollars are being used. They want to know what goes into decisions that impact their lives and livelihoods. These Oversight subcommittees will provide them with that transparency.
“We have seen many instances the past two years where state government has not been transparent, with massive taxpayer-funded business incentive plans that provide an extremely limited return on investment and budget pet projects that are light on specifics but heavy on taxpayer dollars. This has been reflected with government integrity grades that are abysmal compared to other states. The people deserve a better way forward, and these committees will help bring government back to the people.”
In addition to his roles on the Oversight panels, Bierlein will also serve on the House Health Policy Committee. The panel will focus on legislation and discussion regarding public health, health care access, mental health and regulations for health professionals.
Bierlein is in his second term representing the 97th House District, which spans portions of Bay, Genesee, Saginaw and Tuscola counties.
