Monday order from U.S. Energy Secretary keeps plant operational through August 16
Majority Floor Leader Bryan Posthumus released the following statement after the issuance of a federal emergency order to keep the J.H. Campbell coal plant near Holland open. The order, issued by U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, will keep the plant open through Aug. 16. The facility was initially scheduled to be shut down in May 2025 but was ordered to remain open as it provides key energy needs to Michigan and the broader Midwest.
“These federal orders are the only thing standing between ratepayers and even higher energy costs. The Campbell plant’s continued operation is key to providing reliable, affordable energy to Michigan. Without it, our infrastructure would be vulnerable, and costs will go up.
“It should surprise no one that the far-left progressive Democrats that forced the Michigan Green New Deal on us are the ones trying to shut down the Campbell plant. While House Republicans continue to advocate for the best technology and most efficient forms of energy production, Democrats are still screaming for the same failed energy policies forcing everyday Michiganders to pay more.
“House Republicans in Michigan will continue to work to build a diverse energy grid, utilizing the most efficient technologies that deliver an affordable, reliable product to families and business throughout the Great Lakes State. We’re not tied to any one form of energy production – we just want to ensure that when you flip your light switch, your lights turn on, and it doesn’t cost a fortune.”
